WW1 Commemoration

WW1 commemoration dayLast Sunday we held a commemoration as part of the WW1 centenary. It started with a lunch, attended by about 50 people, with a good veg soup, bread and parkin (no meat – the U-boats are very active in the Atlantic), followed by singing WW1 songs (many of the choruses are still familiar, like “Pack up your troubles in your old kitbag” but who remembers the verses?). We then had one room given over to memorabilia, provided by the congregation and by Leicester City Council. A second room displayed records and memorabilia of the four members of Clarendon Park Road Methodist Church who lost their lives in the Great War, and who are remembered on a plaque in the church (we couldn’t find any records of members of Clarendon Park Road Baptist Church who may have lost their lives). Contemporary movie clips were played in the worship centre, and towards the end of the afternoon was held a short act of worship. The whole event struck a good balance between historical interest and reflection on cost of war.
